Looking back to my childhood days, I have always loved to sing. In my book, I spoke of singing with Robin, my friend of two years before cancer took her to heaven. I do not remember how our duet singing came about, I was ten and Robin was twelve, but we sang often in church. Of course, these were fun times in my little country church. There were times, my pastor, during a message would stop and ask me to sing a song that he had on his heart. Singing in the church choir, our pastor’s wife could out sing everyone….really!!!! We simply were her background singers. Mrs. Chitwood did have a genuine love for Jesus and she gladly made a joyful noise.
Singing at college was a level that I had never experienced. As I ponder that time, the old saying is true that I felt like a fish out of water. God knew! God had a special person, picked just for me, who would accompany the seat next to me for three years. Little did she know that she would become my “teacher” designed by God. Not only my “music” teacher but my dearest college friend. Janet Moore, a gift that God knew I needed in many ways. As we sang, I listened! I had never had the opportunity to sing beside someone that truly had the gift of singing. Not only could she sing and sing well, but she was also a true southern belle, one with a heart that loved. A sweetheart that loved like Jesus would love, and she was my special friend.
In our senior year, we were chosen to be in a quartet representing our college. I, even forty-two years later, am still humbled to have been given that opportunity. Speaking of singing with Janet, I remember a time we were asked to sing a duet for chapel service. Afterward, I had several people come to me commenting they could not tell who was singing alto or soprano. Little did Janet know, a GOD GIFT to me, having her singing next to me in coral, for those three years, she had been my special music teacher.
