The other day I was driving in the car and a song came on the radio that caused me to think. It was the song by Zach Williams, To the Table. It starts with “hear the voice of love that’s calling, there’s a chair that waits for you and a friend who understands everything you’re going through.”

As the song played, I started thinking about how as a child we would have family talks around the table. When there was something wrong Mom or Dad would say “come on have a seat, let’s talk about it.” As I sit here now typing this I am at my Grandma Hare’s table. This table is where games were played, prayers were prayed, tough talks were had, and meal’s (oh the meals) have been shared at this table. A table is a place where we can gather and find support.

I remember needing some advice one day and knocking on my Dad’s door and he said, “come on in let’s go to the table.” Well the same is true about God’s table. There is a chair waiting for you. You don’t have to have a reservation or even knock on the door. You can just go in and he will be waiting for you!

The second verse in the song says, “but you keep standing at a distance in the shadow of your shame. There’s a light of hope that’s shining, won’t you come and take your place.”

There is nothing that will shock him or cause him to say, “leave, you are not welcome here!” He can see all of your struggles, sadness, brokenness, and pains. He not only sees it, he understands it better than anyone else can. He is the friend that you can trust and the friend that you need right now!

You know the other thing I think of when I think of tables is that there are often several chairs there. That means we are not alone! He is waiting for others to come as well. Bring it all and talk it out with the creator of the universe. I am sure at the end you will walk away full, as I did the other day when I sat down at the table. As Thanksgiving approaches us and we gather at the table remember God is saving you a seat and that is something we can be thankful for.
